If meetings were 25% more efficient, and you sat in 25% fewer of them, would you be 50% more effective? Not quite — but close!
As a Leadership Coach, one of the most common questions I hear is: "How can I become a better communicator?" Whether you're talking business, dealing with clients, or just navigating everyday relationships, better conversations equal better outcomes.
One overlooked tool in your communications toolkit? A well-run meeting.
We’ve all been there — the aimless Zoom, the never-ending update, the session where nobody knows why they’re there. At best, these meetings drain your time. At worst, they drain the people.
What if we measured meetings like we do intelligence or emotional awareness? Let’s call it your MQ — Meeting Quotient.
How good are you at running a meeting?
Do your meetings have a clear purpose?
Are you adding value — or just adding time on the calendar?
Every larger meeting should be rated by its participants. Really — just take five minutes:
Did we hit our goals?
Was this well-managed?
Are we clear on next steps and who’s doing what?
Have someone capture the feedback and circle back. Instant Accountability.
Here are a few practical ingredients for boosting your MQ:
✅ Guidelines – Don’t rely on "unspoken rules." Document them. Update them every 6 months. Make them visible.
✅ Energy – Keep it fresh: rotate the host, change the location, invite a guest speaker, shorten the agenda, try a standing meeting.
✅Openness – A great host fosters a space where people feel safe to share ideas, disagree respectfully, and give or receive feedback.
Let's run better meetings.
Be deliberate. Be proactive. And hold each other accountable for making communication count.
