Navigating Success in ‘24… more insight into why Personal Culture (values and beliefs) matter.
I recently wrote about the 3 C’s for Success in ‘24, Culture, Change and Communication. Thanks for all the feedback, hopefully the below answers some of your questions.
So what is Personal Culture? It defines the values and beliefs you want to live by and is a vital guide during times of change, uncertainty and growth. Your Culture doesn’t have to be grand, fully formed or long. But it does have to be highly personal - you have to proactively find your own.
My own values - which include creating opportunities, personal growth and giving back - gave
me the courage and conviction to leave a successful career in Finance to pursue a vocation as an Executive Coach-Trainer.
While the big picture is always important, our day to day actions, habits and mindset are vital to ensuring we live our lives consistent with our values and beliefs. The alignment of actions island beliefs is critical to success.
How do you find your Personal Culture?
For most it is a journey of self discovery. It may lead you to challenge a lot of your working assumptions about life … Why this job? Why these relationships? Why these trappings? You have to be courageous, proactive, dig deep and maybe get support.
Here are some questions that helped me:
How do you want to be remembered as a team member, leader, parent, friend?
How do you want to be thought of in today’s meeting, next month, or next year?
In what parts of your life are you acting on autopilot?
There are also a host of values based exercises on the web (search “values wheel”) which may offer a good kick start to your process.
You will know if you’re not living according to your values, have unaddressed issues, which are often subconscious, or lack clarity of purpose, you may feel stuck, overly anxious or have too many down days. I’ve been there and it sucks.. living someone else's values and doing things because they’re expected of you can cause shame and is no way to live an authentic or fulfilling life.
The benefits of this self discovery homework are long lasting and deep rooted. It takes practice and time, so be kind to yourself, put in the “reps” and make sure your actions are aligned with your beliefs.
With more self awareness and self acceptance, you will be better equipped to make opportunities for yourself and handle what life throws at you.
Good luck.
